Apple Acquires Poly9

Yesterday, Apple acquired online mapping company Poly9. Here’s the scoop from AppleInsider:

Among its products is Poly9 Globe, described as a “cross-browser, cross-platform 3D globe which does not require any download.” The interactive software allows users to spin a three-dimensional rendering of the Earth, while providing real-time statistics on the user’s virtual location, including altitude.

It seems as though Apple is continuing its plan to push itself away from Google. Earlier this year, they acquired Placebase, which was a competitor to Google Maps. After that purchase, many people predicted that it would be the software behind a new version of the iOS Maps app that would debut on the iPad, but when that didn’t happen, the rumors quieted down. Now that Apple has bought another mapping-related company, it’ll be interesting to see how they relate to one another.
